The 11th Women are Sacred Conference is an affirmation of the strength of Native women who have persevered, many times in the face of utter despair and loss of life, to not merely survive, but also thrive. No longer will Native women be silenced or paralyzed. As Tillie Black Bear, grandmother of our movement gently reminds us, our work is about resistance and “making those connections beyond the shelter doors”.

The recent signing by President Obama of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) 2013 is a great example of what can be accomplished with grassroots organizing efforts, connections beyond the shelter doors, and ally building by Native women, tribal coalitions, and tribal leaders. VAWA 2013 represents landmark legislation and legal reform that recognizes the unique legal responsibility of the United States to assist Indian tribes in safeguarding the lives of Native women by returning limited criminal jurisdiction to Indian tribes over non-Indian offenders.  This year's Women are Sacred Conference will celebrate VAWA 2013 and the grassroots organizing that made it possible.

Join us to share ideas and continue to create solutions to ensure safe spaces for Native women and tribal communities.  Women, men, youth/children, elders, straight/LGBTQ - together we can strengthen our social justice movement to end violence against Native Women.

This Conference recognizes that women are sacred and central to the health and well being of tribal communities.  This knowledge, combined with the understanding that tribal sovereignty and the safety of Native women are directly linked to one another, is the philosophical foundation of our work and this Conference.

Join NIWRC, nonprofit Tribal Coalitions, Mending the Sacred Hoop, Clan Star, Tribal Law and Policy Institute, Red Wing, Southwest Center for Law & Policy, and many others working together to make this Conference another opportunity for movement building.

The 2013 Women are Sacred Conference will provide all participants a unique opportunity to gain and exchange information, share struggles and solutions, and nurture a growing network to end violence against Native women and create social change.

NOTE:  We have OVW approval for grantees to attend this Conference without requesting and obtaining  an individual Grant Adjustment Notice (GAN) from your OVW Program Manager.
