Beyond Trauma: An Evidence-Based Intervention For Women Experiencing Trauma and Addiction

Stephanie S. Covington PhD, LCSW
Hosted by: National Center on Domestic Violence, Trauma & Mental Health

DescriptionDomestic violence and addiction are often addressed as separate issues even though a growing body of evidence demonstrates a clear and consistent association between the incidence of addiction and interpersonal violence (physical, emotional and sexual) in women’s lives. Co-occurring domestic violence and substance abuse can impact women’s safety, decision-making and access to relevant services.

This training is designed to help domestic violence coalitions and programs build their capacity to provide better advocacy, support and services for survivors dealing with trauma and addiction. Its primary focus will be on the practical application of Dr. Covington’s evidence-based curriculum Beyond Trauma: A Healing Journey for Women and her shorter 5-session trauma intervention (Healing Trauma) for women who have been abused. Both are designed to support healing and recovery from trauma with attention to substance abuse as a primary theme. The training will also identify key elements for creating gender-responsive trauma-informed programming for women dealing with addictions. Barriers to services experienced by survivors, including those living in rural communities will also be addressed.

Who Should AttendThis training will be most helpful for experienced DV advocates and clinicians working with DV programs seeking to develop and sharpen their skills and as well as to share them with others. It will also be helpful to coalitions developing their capacity to support trauma-informed work among member programs. Attendance by small teams (coalition and local program(s)) is encouraged.
